The best online summary I have seen regarding Old Testament and New Testament positions on marriage and divorce is as follows. It's quite exhaustive (this happens to be from a position paper of the Assemblies of God).

Divorce was actually a serious social ill among Jews at the time of Christ. It was very easy for a man to divorce his wife (although impossible for the woman to do the same). For a woman to be "put away" was shameful in the community, she was often shunned. Also, there was no mandatory support required of a man who divorced his wife. If her family did not take her back, then she would be forced to beg on the streets.
