You go it alone when your offerings are the best and adding any other company's products to your mix would be a negative. However, when your technology is not the best, you seek partners. In my humble opinion, IBM and Compact, by this alliance, are admitting that their storage offerings are inferior to EMC's. IBM tried this tact once before with Storage Technology and we all remember what the results of that alliance were.
