JUL 7, 2000, M2 Communications - London -- NEC Corporation today announced the European availability of its advanced 3rd Generation (3G) mobile communications technology, based on the UMTS standard. Coinciding with the issue of the European 3G licenses, NEC's tried and tested technology provides operators with the infrastructure they need to quickly roll-out their 3G services.

NEC is a leading player in mobile communications and has been developing end-to-end 3G networks since 1992, starting with greenfield W-CDMA design and development.

NEC is currently working with Manx Telecom (a wholly owned subsidiary of BT) and Siemens to provide the Isle of Man with Europe's first commercial 3G network. The network, which will be operational early in 2001, will provide residents with voice and Internet services, as well as entertainment services such as video-on-demand, networked games.

The Isle of Man 3G project was initiated by BT in 1999. NEC has been testing its technology with BT since 1998. Mark Briers, Project Director, BT Wireless, said, "This project positions BT and NEC at the forefront of worldwide multi-media data services. We chose NEC to partner us because of their proven track record in advanced communications deployment".

Jonathan Harvey, Project Director 3G Mobile Systems, NEC Europe, said, "Many people are making claims to be "first in 3G", but we are the first to actually deliver. It is vital that operators roll-out the 3G services quickly, in order to get return on the large investments they made in
purchasing their licenses.

As they race to roll-out their services, NEC is ready to provide them with the solutions they need to create successful 3G businesses".
