The Vancouver Sun says in its lead editorial in its Friday edition that allegations of stock price manipulation have damaged reputations in the market. The Sun says that even if the practice is not widespread, regulators have to reassure the public that its assets reflect market values. The relentless media coverage of allegations that RT Capital Management, an arm of Royal Bank of Canada, and traders at 11 brokerage firms violated the Securities Act does not auger will for Canadian pension and mutual fund managers. A level of trust has been lost in the fracas. The Ontario Securities Commission suspects that the manipulation of stock prices on Canadian markets may be widespread and, along with regulators from British Columbia, they plan to investigation. The Sun says this is a good decision. According to published reports, in the last three years there have been many other unexpected hikes in stock prices on the final day of trading at year's end and a subsequent decline in the new year.
