| Thanks, I suspected as much, and debated whether to honor the request, but the person swore they were from her son's local police department. The hypodermic one sounded particularly manufactured. (For one thing, who has so much access to HIV serum?) I have talked to contemporary teenagers who swear they know someone who knows someone who ate the famous fast- food, deep- fried rat, which was going around before I was a teen. I think certain things make sense to people once they are floated. I mean, tampering with Tylenol bottles was real, as was toxic shock syndrome from tampons (although unintentional), so why not these things? The interesting thing is what it says about the weakening of institutional sources of authoritative information, and the rise of alternative sources, not only within traditionally isolated groups, like ghetto blacks, but among affluent whites.......... |
