It seems to me that the only way QCOM won't be a gorilla is if an alternative to QCOM's IP is found and used (or the IP rights are ignored, in which case no one is safe). So one can either take a bet now, or wait until things are sorted out.
Personally, I took a small bet now, and also have Nokia. Cell vendors aren't playing ball with QCOM now because they have no reason to tip their hands. Until 3G really starts being implemented, anyway.
As far as wild swings, I've owned and added to my SFE holdings since it was in the 20s, watched it plummet to the teens, went up to the 90s and is now back to 30. I was lucky having sold a bit in the 80s (I needed cash) but I don't regret holding the rest throughout one bit. (All that split adjusted.)
As far as the QCOM volatility in the recent past, I consider that noise. I'm looking at holding my investments for years, not monhts. If something significant changes, then I'll reconsider positions.

P.S. Take everything I say with a pound of salt. I'm a fairly green investor who is a mathematician, who wishes he was a physicist, who used to pretend to be a software engineer, who now pretends to be a manager. And I just started reading the book. |
