Thread

A couple of people have PM'd and asked me what my feelings were regarding the moderated thread. Because I have been really busy, I have had little time to think about it til today nor have I had time to respond to the PM notifying me of its incubation nor the one announcing its actual arrival this week.

However, today I have thought about it and I am curious as to what others are thinking. I know this is probably an uncomfortable situation for all of us. And it probably would be easier to let it go and move on.

But if I am going to do that, I need to say some things. First since my high school and college fraternity days, I had promised myself that I would never participate in an organization that encourages exclusivity. I learned then that inevitably the excluded people are hurt, and it creates an unhealthy environment for the people who are included. And yes I know, the moderated thread is open to everyone....so long as you behave.

As a kid, I was an avid reader of history. And from history I learned there are times when someone will promise peace and prosperity in exchange for some of your freedom. That promise has been made innumerable times throughout history and unfortunately peace is rarely delivered and when it is, its usually at the cost of someone's personal freedoms. You never get nirvana for free.

I know talking about this stuff sounds a bit dramatic considering that this is only an investment thread on a website somewhere in the vast internet. But for me its become a sort of neighborhood...where I have gotten to know a lot of very different and sometimes unusual/unique people in a short period of time. And whether we realize it or not, it was a fairly dynamic community with very challenging and extremely informative and sometimes compelling content....so that no matter how hard I tried to reduce my participation because of my schedule, I failed. It was a thread that believed in a company at which everyone else laughed. That belief and commitment is what made the AMD thread one of the more unique ones on SI. Its what turned some of the most ridiculed stockholders...AMD longs...into some of the most respected ones. And it happened IMO because of the all of the posters and I mean every single last one of them.

So what's my feeling about the moderated thread....I think this post makes it clear. I will not participate in something that is autocratic by nature and may be ruled by one individual......even on an investment thread with SI. If the original thread dies, then I leave....its as simple as that. But I leave the better person for the experience....and I thank you all for that.

That's all, folks. I hope you will post back and let me know what you are thinking.
