Uncle Frank, I am trying to think of reasons that someone would not buy.

Shoot this reasoning down for me:

3G is about a year away. Either late 2001 or early 2002. Therefore manufacturers do not want to invest in creating any more inventory of the current technology than they have to. Manufacturers have to be asking themselves: Why push demand up and cause ourself to invest in more production line equipment to make old models when we know we will have to tear most of the equipment apart in a year. The equipment won't even be paid for. Just-in-time inventory is fine. We should save most of our investment for the 3G roll out.

Because of this sales (and patent payments) will not be so fantastic for the next year. Therefore QCOM stock will languish until late 2001 before moving up. Therefore why not put your investment in something else until late 2001?
