That would be quite surprising --- temperature, you know. It is quite true that there are blooms of bacteria around many subsea volcanoes (black smokers)living on the nutrients and heat. You also see a lot of life in the hot water pools in active areas such as Yellow Stone, but the temperature gradients are such that life probably thins out rapidly with depth. However. Tom Gold thought that massive amounts of life generating methane lived underground.
