I wanted to make an additional point. Only if Gates were willing to liquidate all his holdings would he truly have billions available to tamper with the political system. Most wealth is hypothetical, in the sense that it represents the valuation of paper assets at any given time. The actual wealth is dispersed throughout the country in the form of factories, offices, shops, and inventories. It is unlikely that Gates would even be willing to liquidate his personal assets, such as his house, to raise the requisite cash. Perot balked past a point, at laying out more money. Finally, I think you underestimate the repulsion most people feel for a plutocrat trying to buy an election. If he tried, very likely he would lose..........
