Gopher,

I think you are wrong on all counts.

First:"Without Via AMD has to use FAB capacity to manufacture chipsets instead of flash. Is that good news?"

AMD uses UMC currently for chipsets and may also use TSMC.
So no internal fab capacity is wasted or used up.

Secondly:"If Intel has patents that apply to VIA's Athlon chipsets then what is the chance they do not also apply to AMD's Athlon chipsets?"

The essence of the AMD/VIA dispute was the P6 bus and extension to PC133 prior to Intels release of such product, the athlon does not use the P6 bus so a dispute on that is impossible. That does Not mean that there isn't something else that Intel can make a claim upon.

Finally:"I would be very concerned if Via gave up on producing Athlon chipsets. "

You should be much more concerned if AMD decides to leave the chipset biz and rely on its partners like VIA and no shows like MU, SIS etc.

Otherwise we will continue to have oversupply of CPU's, and undersupply of slow chipsets with continuing spotty supply of MB's.

regards,

Kash
