Milo, Most people were coerced into their particular faith by clerical oppression, mediated by family and social pressures. You can tell this by seeing the degree of correlation between the parents religion and the childs.
In a rational place where the child had a choice you would get a high degree of variance.
You do not see this at all, you see that the child is what the parents were.
As you know the Jesuit saying, "Give us the child and we will own the man" is valid and true. religion is a social meme and has no other validity. The concept of some kind of deity that you worship is bizarre.
Another things that tells the tale is that most rleigions feel they are the one true and all the others are false. Well, they are all false, take it on faith.
When I see the evil done by religion all over the world over the ages I can find no redeeming feature in organised religion. Remember, even Hitler petted cats, so an isolated good aspect does not rehabilitate and evil thing.
