China's Zhongxing <0063.SZ> urges CDMA resumption

SHANGHAI, July 9 (Reuters) - China's Zhongxing Telecom Corp has urged the government to reconsider its suspension of a CDMA (code division multiple access) project, the official China Daily Business Weekly said on Sunday.

Last month, China Unicom <0762.HK>, the only authorised CDMA network operator, announced it had scrapped plans for a project using current-generation CDMA wireless telephone standards and said it would build a network using newer technology developed by Qualcomm Inc <QCOM.O> of the United States.

"We hope the government and related service operators will reconsider the CDMA system and resume the project as soon as possible," the newspaper quoted Zhongxing's chairman Zhang Taifeng as saying.

Zhongxing officials were not available for comment.

China's mobile communications network largely uses the GSM standard, and Zhang said China must prepare itself for a possible shortage of GSM frequency, the newspaper said.

"We must take measures to deal with the coming shortage of GSM network frequency resources, and a new CDMA network is the perfect option," he said.

Telecommunications equipment firm Zhongxing has already invested heavily in CDMA, the newspaper said.
