Gopher,

Without Via AMD has to use FAB capacity to manufacture chipsets instead of flash. Is that good news?

I believe AMD is using UMC for chipsets.

One possible way out for AMD would be to make the Northbridge compatible with Via Southbridge, so this way, if ia comes up with say FireWire support, motherboard makers could just plug in a new southbridge.

But Northbridge is critical to performance, and AMD should either think about incorporating it on some CPU's, or make widely available, and leave other chipset makers work only on Southbridges. It all assumes that AMD 760 chipset will kick a$$.

The problem with this approach culd be video. Is integrated video part of the Northbridge?
