Article....HIPPIECRITS AND THE PRESS
A NOBLE BIRTH, AN IGNOMINIOUS DEATH?

Americans, they cannot be blamed. They believe their televisions and the chattering fools that fill their screens with their bland sophistry and champagne socialist punditry. They cannot see beyond that fact that the issue is no longer "where does Elian belong" the issue is "do we follow the rule of law, or do we let our frustration with the court process sanction extreme force, by executive privilege?"

The 'Me Generation' (I want it now and for free) and their selfishness infiltrated our culture so seamlessly as to be nearly silent. But, as it bared its evil insides on national TV, it was called "the right thing to do".
Watching the people choose sides on the issue, is something of a grotesque, alarming spectacle.

* The hippiecrits (former middle class college protestors, present soccer moms and Clinton sycophants, those busy remembering Kent State this weekend) are silent (or strongly approving) as hippiecrits often are when faced with such blatant hypocrisy. The peace symbol is after all, the footprint of a chicken.

* Father's rights groups insist Juan Miguel has father's rights in Cuba.

* At CNN they close ranks and stomp on the Constitution to protect the King and his deranged maid servant. They are humbled that Castro thanked the American media for their coverage of Elian.

* Reno receives flowers from some secret admirers.

* The press corps claps wildly and are fed lunch like obedient dogs.

* Libertarians and Conservatives e-mail Janet Reno electronic dog droppings. A website begins receiving many signatures in vain: impeachreno.org

* Most Conservatives see red for the first time since the 1950s and think about burning the flag for the first time in their lives, but even that is too much, so they fly it upside down instead as a symbol of distress.

* Some people swear we've lost or sense of family values and can't wait to send that kid back to Cuba with the rest of the (damn) Cubans.

* Libertarians say, "I told you so! And take out their Gadsen flags " Don't tread on me!"

* The NRA increases its membership, again, and people who do not even own guns, send them money.

* The 2nd amendment begins to mean something closer to its original intention.

* A photograph is taken that may very well drive Al "no controlling legal authority" Gore out of his home state of Washington DC. The Internet he invented burns him again. The picture Joe Lockhart wanted pulled from the television and newspapers, lives on in electronic infamy.

* George Will says something so razor sharp that it bears often repeating, "You can believe what Eric Holder says or you can believe your two lying eyes."

* Many people believe their two lying eyes and change the channel quickly due to "Elian fatigue". Can't Bill stick to porno? It's more entertaining and makes better jokes.

* Some vaguely remember that the last Democratic President they worshipped, probably would have let Elian stay. They pine for Camelot.

* Someone (who I cannot recall) mentions that Reagan might have used it as an opportunity to end communism in Cuba, "Castro, let your people go!" I pine for 1985.

* Many people actually weep and fall ill. Some elderly Cuban Americans have stress attacks.

* Eric Holder is made to look like an absolutely incompetent fool by Constitutional scholar Andrew Napolitano. We realize the DOJ is run by people who are not fit to clerk in a grade school library, much less in a legal firm, much less be in control of the Department of Justice.

* The ACLU, Alan Dershowitz, Lawrence Tribe break ranks with Clinton supporters and agree, "Clinton violated the Constitution."

* More liberals break ranks: Dick Morris, Lynn Samuels, Sen. Bob Graham, Congressman Robert Menendez, Chris Matthews, Cokie Roberts are stunned and say so.

* I realize that I would not want to be in a foxhole with most of my fellow countrymen.

* Castro holds an extensive May Day celebration, the best of Soviet kitsch, Caribbean style praising the return of Elian. Juan Miguel receives a cell-phone call from his master.

* The Republican party threatens hearings and then withdraws its threat for fear of election backlash "We're never gonna get him, are we? Heh. Heh. He's a slick one."

* I realize that half of America believes that the impeached, traitorous Clinton is the good guy. And that the Republicans are forever on the witch hunt just because Clinton breaks the law with impunity. "So what, he's the President, he's allowed to break the law with impunity."

* Clinton, in typical tactless form, holds a disgrace of a White House Press Correspondent's Dinner replete with Elian and impeachment jokes. Because for a sociopath, sending a child back to Fidel's totalitarian regime, and being impeached is a big joke. The press cackles adoringly.

* Matt Drudge does a brave, brave thing and flashes a T-Shirt of Elian in Clinton's face at the same dinner, giving the media a flash of their futures. As they keep up the egregious lying, the Internet exposes them mercilessly.

The Me Generation and its master have their legacy now. They have seeded themselves. And their shallow, foul philosophy has sprouted up in every single institution in the land.

Have we lost our courage, our self-esteem, our will? William Bennett bemoaned the Death of Outrage. Alan Bloom wove a sad eulogy in the Closing of the American Mind, Robert Bork intoned that we were "Slouching Towards Gomorrah" and James Burhnam wrote about The Suicide of the West.

Death, Closing, Slouching, Suicide? A noble birth, an ignominious death? Though our moral and intellectual crisis is grave and is not easily addressed, none of these scholars took into real account the Internet' s capacity to change how information is received and disseminated. It is a challenge certainly to the media but also to academe. They may be left weakened in a few years. The Internet provides alternatives. The Press corps might well enjoy their final moments, basking in Bill's glow and reliving their over-rated, sentimentalized, youth. The future is elsewhere and they insist on ignoring it. The Elian case proves if nothing else, that they may, if left to their own devices, lie, deny, spin and cackle themselves out of existence.
