It's time to admit that the PC's "Heathkit" era is over. Those old enough to remember the 1960s, when television was still young, will recall that there was a company named Heathkit that used to advertise in magazines such as Popular Science. For a low fee they'd ship you a bunch of parts and instructions for how to assemble them into a working television. A fun hobby for Dad to while away evenings and weekends.

Heathkit still exists (see heathkit.com for their web site) but they no longer sell kit televisions. The reason is that television became a mass-market item and nobody would dream of trying to fiddle with the insides of their sets these days. The PC has gone though a similar evolution from a hobbyist to a mass market appliance. At the client level, the upgrade market is simply no longer relevant. Today you buy a PC, use it for anywhere from two to four years, then junk it for a vastly more capable successor which comes preloaded with the latest OS. The entire PC industry is optimized to this consumption model. It's a sign of the maturity of the PC market. Upgrading an old PC to Windows 2000 is like trying to upgrade an old television to HDTV. Maybe you can, but why would you want to?
