The Fry's report:

Made my weekly one-hour cruise through my local Fry's (and Office Depot) stores - had to get a new mouse - but also have some random observations from a fundamentalist:

1) Fry's looks like it's stocking up, maybe for the Back to School season? All shelves were full.
2) If you think CF is hard to find, try to find a Memory Stick. I don't know if Sony has licensed their standard to other manufacturers to produce the Mem Stick, but if Sony is the only label you can get, then they will certainly be severely capacity constrained in comparison to CF which is produced by several labels.
3) Sony does have choice real estate in Fry's and Good Guy's with their Digital Imaging kiosk to showcase their Mem. Stick technology. The main problem that I have - and I am a big Sony consumer electronics fan - is that their devices are waaaayyy too expensive. I have so many more choices by adopting the more generic CF or Smart Media standard - and that is one of the main reasons that I own a Nikon digital camera instead of the Sony (I wish I could have that Zeiss lens!). I guess Beta and minidiscs just weren't enough to teach them a lesson...
4) HP Photosmart P1000 inkjet printer has internal slots for both CF and SmartMedia cards directly. Pretty slick.
5) SanDisk has a nifty little neoprene carry holder for 4 CF cards - $6.99 at Office Depot, mine only had one left. Yes, it does have the SanDisk logo on it also.
6) Sony seems to making another big marketing push for Memory Stick - two page spread in today's Sunday LA Times Circuit City insert.
7) My Office Depot has restocked with SanDisk 48 and 80mb cards. Last week I bought the last 48 meg CF that they had.
8) Using my Nikon Coolpix 800 has now produced one gripe. The camera takes great pictures, but I am finding that the size is starting to bug me. The lens sticks out too much, and overall it's a bit bulky. (Please note that all Sony digital cameras are bulky) The new cameras from Canon and Fuji (very nice - MX700 I think?) seem to address this issue as they are both pretty flat - could fit in a pocket.
9) I almost bought the SanDisk USB CF reader - but the line at Fry's was just too long. Anyone else using this thing, is it a necessity?
10) Why is it that everytime I go to Fry's I am assaulted by a barrage of nasty, organically-produced odors?

Looking forward to tomorrow...
