I got my first digital camera to get rid of some junk on ebay. Well, once I took my pics and uploaded them on the web, I returned the camera - it was a 1 megapixel HP cheapie (but it came with a 16mb CF card if I remember correctly). Once I sold > $1000 of stuff on ebay that I would have otherwise just thrown away, I got my Coolpix 800. I still didn't want to pay up for the 990, because I know that the $1000 digital camera of today is the $500 digital camera of tomorrow. I didn't want to make my investment until I could get better than 2 megapixels for < $500 - which is exactly what I did.

The camera is great, and I like the Nikon name since that is what I use for 35mm film photography. Just wish it were smaller or at least flatter. Nice to have the buffer that allows continuous shooting.

Question: Digital cameras seem to be battery hogs. I've been told to get Maxell rechargeables - any other suggestions?

Also, while I did flinch at the high price of the 48mb SanDisk CF card - I failed to factor in the huge savings over time in film and development!! The card will more than pay for itself and handily justifies the premium. Thanks Aus, I wasn't thinking.
