Spoke to a friend today who holds a high post in the Treasury Dept. He is involved in the project to introduce new Federal Reserve notes at a high level.

Seems that the current US currency is being heavily counterfeited in a number of foreign lands. And that simply will not do for the "de facto world currency" to quote my friend.

We did not discuss gold, but he made it very clear that maintaining the dollar's status as the "de facto world currency" (especially with the Euro making its debut) is one of the Treasury's primary objectives. Not hard to imagine them quietly trashing gold in pursuit of this goal.
