I was totally cracking up when i read Fleck's Column.

In the past, I've commented on the absurdity of the data coming out of the BLS. Many other folks have commented on it now, so it's not exactly a novel thought, but I recently received an e-mail from a regular reader who used to play a part in compiling government numbers like the unemployment report. Once you read this, it shouldn't be any surprise that the numbers are somewhat fluky in the first place, even if they're not being massaged by the BLS:

Let me tell you how the government gets its numbers and why they are so wrong most of the time.
When I was in business it seems that I spent a lot of time filling out forms at the request of the government. Since my business was a small business I got sick and tired of filling out government forms, so when I got them I just put any number that came into my head on the form. That way I didn't have to look up records and take all that time away from running my business. I know that most if not all of the small businessmen I knew did the same thing. The numbers are a joke.

If it expects an overworked and underpaid businessman to give them the correct numbers, then [the government should] reimburse him for the time spent. No names please.
