Teleson has a 3G license with QCOM, but NOK does not, therefore NOK cannot buy 3G chips from Teleson until they sign a 3G license.

Some time back I received a PM from a knowledgeable thread contributor who believed that QCOM could have had a chip deal with NOK a long time ago, and could even have a direct deal now. The reason given for why they did not was that Dr. J is insisting that NOK sign a 3G license. I assume this license, like the one ERICY signed, would recognize QCOM’s essential IPR for any flavor of CDMA.

Obviously NOK is not ready yet to throw in the IPR towel, so to speak. So they make an interim deal with Telson. Why?

Some time ago it was pointed out that NOK uses a different chip design for its CDMA phones – a two-chip design. To use QCOM’s single chip design would require a redesign of their phones. Since NOK is not ready to throw in the towel on its CDMA ASIC design efforts, they make a deal with Telson.

Also, while this deal calls for 2G only, NOK really loses nothing with respect to 3G. Why? Because QCOM has said it is designing their 3G chips to be pin-compatible with older chips.

So, for now NOK gets things ready via Telson using 2G chips. But can at any moment come to a 3G deal with QCOM and have Telson plug in the 3G chips.

Does this sound plausible?
