OT (again. sorry. sort of. promise not to post too much bloat once fall rally begins.)

Certainly the chief reason we spend so much time on all this tech investing stuff is to make money. But I at least have found that increasingly a second important reason is the sheer fun and wonder of immersing myself in cutting-edge, life-enhancing, world-transforming developments. And by backward extension, this has made me more interested than I was in the history of technological innovation as well.

In that context I recommend the new A&E movie Longitude, starring Michael Gambon and Jeremy Irons, which tells the story of John Harrison and his amazing timepieces that gave sailors a forerunner of the GPS system:

Couldn't help think of QCOM as I watched Harrison battle against the FUDsters of the day who tried to deny him his rightful prize; suggest we call Ed Snyder "Reverend Maskelyne" from now on.

Furthermore, people might find this fun and thought-provoking; it's a list of the greatest engineering achievements of the twentieth century as called by the National Academy of Engineering:

Finally, the new issue of Wired (not up on the website yet) has an interesting interview with John Seely Brown, the recently retired director of Xerox PARC, on possible future tech innovations.

PS Check this out--JDSU now the fourth largest company in the Naz 100. Even a newbie like me can remember screaming about it last fall to all and sundry and having them blankly go, "Huh?"
