When do we get to take down this Castro fellow, equis ... this is what i wonder .... the thread is still being distracted by the right wingnuts grinding on about how bad Clinton is, as if they thought anybody cared any more, and how bad the supreme martial powers of the INS are, as if they just discovered that those powers exist.

Sort of off-topic really imho ... the thread is about Elián, and now that he is safely released from the US it seems to me the thing that would most benefit him would be to encourage democracy in his country ... most effective way to do that would be to encourage contact and information flow to and from the island ... here's a start from the nytimes - nytimes.com

I wonder if this may ever be true - ""Time will pass and people will forget," he said. "Time will erase it. He will walk on the street one day and people will not notice him.""

That would be a more healthy life for a kid, for sure, but he is a powerful symbol to many .... better that the focus be more general, for his sake.

Ending the travel restrictions is important, for two reasons - 1. that would remove the overt hostility of the US toward Cuba, and 2. it would enable more contact ...... But the Miami bunch is still in control of US foreign policy, they've been able to force restrictions on that food and medicine bill that make it near useless .... and i just noticed - on this policy.com page - policy.com - the opinion poll that was back in March around 80% in favor of dropping the embargo is now only 42% in favor ... looks like the CANF got a few hundred to press No, lol ... i just don't believe the majority of americans want to continue hostilities against Cuba.
