tinkershaw: One of the interesting aspects of Geof Moore's new book "...Fault Line" is a diagram on p.94 which shows the "Competitive-Advantage Hierarchy." The base is "Technology Wave".

His description starts with:

"In high tech, competitive advantage begins with the categorical advantage of a new technology over an older one. ...."

This is in his chapter on "Shareholder Value".

Your fine post on AMCC reminded me of that. (AMCC is in a basket in my case which includes BRCM, TXN, PMCS (recent purchase)and then a bit different - CREE and ARMHY.)(And then the related aspect of the gorilla QCOM)

BTW agree strongly with your general approach as it has worked for me over the years.

But am curious the extent to which you dig into the technologies themselves prior to or simultaneously to looking for a buy and hold candidate.

It would seem common sense that a technology investor - especially a high tech investor - try to learn as much as practical himself/herself about the key technology underlying that company's future as simple prudence and risk minimization.

Moore seems to suggest a similar view in his new book.

Commend it to you.

Best.
