brees, to my knowledge, fraud in science gets rooted out pretty quickly. Discoveries don't count for much unless the results can be reproduced and used as a basis for further work. That's the cool thing about science, versus, say, religion: the self correcting mechanisms tend to do ok. One recent example: nobody pays much attention to cold fusion anymore.

For the specific case of dinosaurs and birds, that particular hypothesis was around long before 1999. National Geographic is displayed proudly on coffee tables throughout the land, but it's not the first thing real scientists reach for, at the professional level anyway.
