For what it's worth, you can buy at the bid if you specify the price and don't put your order in at market. You won't always get it, but with a reasonalbe share volume, you often will. You often see trades going buy between the bid ask spread because people have set a price and won't pay market. The MM wants to fill the shares, so he takes to offer.

With stocks trading a big bid/ask spread, you can save tons of money by putting your orders in at a price. You must be patient and may not get the trade. I traded OCCF several times last year and they had an incredible spread of 8 points. I found it possible to buy at the bid and sell at the ask everytime. They had a very small float and a lot of demand which helped.

Also, Schwab will match internal trades before going to the market. Which means they give you the sellers stock at your price without trading through the MM. Since Schwab is trading about 8 or 9% of the stocks in America, this is happening a lot.
