SBC To Offer First ``All-Inclusive'' Promotion Featuring DSL-Ready Compaq PC And High-Speed DSL Internet Service With Prodigy

``Plug and Play'' DSL Solution Makes It More Convenient and Affordable for Customers to Experience Faster Online Speeds and Greater Productivity
SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 2000-- SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE:SBC - news), the nation's leading provider of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service, today announced an unprecedented broadband promotion with Prodigy Communications Corporation (NYSE:PRGY - news).

For $59.95 per month for 24 months, qualifying customers can receive SBC's High-Speed DSL Internet Service with Prodigy, and a customized DSL-equipped Compaq Presario computer valued at more than $1,000.

The promotion, which runs through August 31, will help improve customers' broadband experience by making it more convenient and affordable for them to enjoy the benefits of a high-speed connection. The PC will come equipped for DSL technology, enabling customers to quickly configure and access their DSL Internet service.

The promotion is one of the first joint marketing programs between SBC and Prodigy since SBC transitioned management of its retail consumer and small business Internet operations to Prodigy in May. The promotion is initially available in the Pacific Bell and Southwestern Bell regions, and is expected to be available in the Nevada Bell, SNET and Ameritech regions later this year.

``Accessing the Internet is the primary reason many customers are purchasing and/or upgrading computers, and our promotion with Compaq provides a tremendous value that makes high-speed broadband service a viable and affordable option for this diverse customer base,'' said James D. Gallemore, executive vice president of strategic marketing for SBC. ``SBC and Prodigy are removing barriers and expanding the market for DSL Internet service. A high-speed DSL connection enables customers to experience the Internet's full potential, and accomplish more while online. Customers will also be able to more fully enjoy bandwidth-rich applications such as streaming video and audio, online interactive games and distance learning.''

``Together SBC and Prodigy are taking a significant step toward making DSL Internet service accessible and affordable,'' said Charles Roesslein, Prodigy president and chief executive officer. ``This is the first of many new joint programs and services that Prodigy and SBC will offer together, which will continue to build upon Prodigy's number one position as the manager of DSL Internet accounts, and the third-largest fee-based ISP in the nation.''

``This is a major milestone for Compaq, as it showcases our ability to support enterprises, such as SBC and Prodigy, that are focused on providing Internet-computing solutions to their customers,'' said Mike Larson, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Compaq Consumer Products Group. ``The Compaq Presario is a perfect fit because of its integrated DSL technology and easy set-up process, backed by Compaq's extensive customer support capabilities. As a result, SBC customers will be able to immediately enjoy their broadband experience.''

The ``plug and play'' solution will increase SBC's installation capacity resulting in easier, faster and more convenient DSL installations for customers. After receiving the DSL/PC equipment package, customers will be able to set up the computer and the DSL Internet Service in about an hour, and begin accessing the Internet at speeds up to 1.5 megabits per second, 50 times faster than a standard 28.8 kilobit per second modem. Downstream connection speeds vary depending on a customer's distance from the central office and other factors, but customers are guaranteed a minimum downstream sync rate of 384 Kbps between the customer location and serving central office or DSL gateway.

The DSL modem is pre-installed, as well as all software that connects the PC to the DSL Internet service, allowing customers the ease and convenience of installing DSL completely on their own. Customers simply plug-in the computer, and insert special DSL filters into phone jacks that support analog phones and fax machines to filter out the DSL signal. The filters eliminate the need for a technician to install a splitter at the customer's location and enables customers to simultaneously surf the Internet and talk on the phone using a single phone line. A toll-free help-desk is available for technical support seven days a week.

The new Compaq Presario will include:

566+ MHz Intel Celeron Processor

64 MB SDRAM Memory
10.0GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive
Texas Instruments internal 6.0Mb Digital DSL Modem
40x CD-ROM drive
15`` Color Monitor
JBL ProAmplified Speakers
Embedded Audio (SoundBlaster compatible) and embedded Graphics
Complete software package
USB Ports
Customers can upgrade their Compaq Presario PC at an additional cost. Upgrades include faster processors, larger monitors, additional RAM memory, expanded hard drives, Read/Write CD-ROM and home networking.

SBC's Internet companies will also offer a promotion for customers interested in ordering the Basic DSL Internet service without the PC. Customers in the Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell, SNET and Nevada Bell regions can order SBC Basic High-Speed DSL Internet Service with Prodigy for $39.95 a month, and $99 for equipment with a one-year term commitment. By using the self-install kit, customers can avoid equipment installation charges. Ameritech customers will receive the same monthly pricing and free equipment and installation.

Through SBC's $6 billion Project Pronto initiative, more than 14 million homes and businesses are eligible to take advantage of the SBC promotion. By year-end, SBC plans to make DSL service available to more than 18 million homes and businesses, about 50 percent of its customers. By the end of 2002, SBC will have made DSL available to 80 percent of its customers, and dramatically increased DSL speeds.

Customers can learn more about DSL and sign-up for the new promotion over the Internet by visiting SBC's Web site, www.sbc.com, or by simply calling SBC at 888/2DSL-888. Information about Prodigy Internet is available at www.prodigy.com.
