I don't think this has a snowballs chance in Santa Clara of going through.

re: GLW could have made the deal but chose not to pay up. Therefore, they should have no complaints if somebody else decides to ante up.

Should is very different than will. They will say/do what is in the best interest of GLW.

re: Also, Scifres and Straus mentioned that the deal would be good for customers, so what's not to like.

It's unlikely they would say it would be bad for customers.

IF the deal were to go through, it would create a powerhouse. My take is that they said "what the heck, lets give it a try". Sort of like buying a lotto ticket, you know you won't win, but if you do...

If this was 1 1/2 years ago, or 6 1/2 months in the future, I would say it would have a chance. Not now, not with Klein and Reno. With WCOM/FON it could be reasonably argued the deal increased competition, I don't see where this has a leg to stand on.

At least not now.
