You are talking about Malthus. I believe that is valid. But we aren't there yet. And we have behaviors that rats don't have that allow us to deal with overcrowding by developing sophisticated social patterns.

It's all very interesting to consider.

Children are a very difficult case as we have seen with Elian. This is especially true in a "free" country like ours. The freedom of parents vs the freedom of children- in our country, traditionally, we assume that the parents know what is best for their children. A tremendous assumption to make- I agree. But it is the one we make here. In Cuba- according to some here- the State knows what is best (I don't know enough about Cuban law re:children to know). Also a valid choice (imo)- but one we chose not to make.

Our society is fairly consistent- and probably, so is the Cuban system. The problem is when you want to change from one system to another. Most humans are too inflexible to tolerate change very well- especially "rule" changes, in religious, or social rules. When these kinds of "rules" are changing too fast for people to adjust we get societal upheavals- I say this speaking strictly as an alien observer of the human race.

So if you want to change the rules, be warned, there are big costs.
