The basis of most religions is to be GOOD onto others and to live in peace and harmony.

The basis of most religions is unquestioning belief, and that is a dangerous thing.

My point was that MAN himself is the culprit of such atrocities. It is not religion.

You can't separate the church from the people; the church is the people. Religion was invented by humans to serve human purposes. Some of those purposes are good, others less so. My point is that charismatic leaders have often found it easy to direct the credulity that religion fosters to their own purposes.

I am personally uncomfortable with any absolutist belief system, especially when it stresses the conversion of the unbelievers. Not that I would question or challenge anyone's right to believe what it suits them to believe. I just don't like the idea of people trying to use the power of the state to further their own quest to expand their belief systems.

While I totally affirm the right of the religious to hold their own beliefs, I must also affirm my own right to hold and state my own belief, which is that religion is a crutch invented by humans to alleviate the distress that came from their own lack of comprehension of their universe.
