I do not know many people who would say that handouts are more important than rights. I know people who would say that a civilized society provides a safety net for bad times. And I know that Republicans are inclined to keep welfare provisions a temporary expedient rather than a way of life. For most of us, this is not a matter of selling out, but a matter of balancing goods.......
