That is a very sad story. I bet he's a church goer. I bet he would have told you he was a moral man, I bet he would tell you he still is one.

I am never surprised at what people do, nor by their capacity for self delusion. We all have that- but I think the best of us realize it. Almost all of us are capable of doing despicable things if put in the right circumstance- the question is one of confluences- are you in the wrong place at the wrong time where the confluence of events sets you up to be your worst at a time when you are least able to resist those impulses?

The less aware you are of your own nature, the more "moral" you think you are, the less likely I think you may be to resist your own animal side, your own passions, your own violence. I think religion can help make people very bad indeed when it convinces them that there is some path to "salvation". IMO the only "path" is the path to humanity- the only goal I keep in mind- and it can only be obtained
by eternal vigilance over the animal side.
