The crutch which was once religion is today replaced by UFOs, Aliens and alien abductions.

If that is true, than it would seem that a lot more people are walking without crutches: very few people pay much attention to UFO and alien stories.

humans beings will always need something to believe in

We can believe that we are capable of ordering our own behaviour and improving our own lives. Who cares how large the universe is and how small we are? We have a world, we live in it with other people. Keeping that straight is more than enough to keep us busy.

if you really knew what was waiting for you on the other side you would probably blow your brains off right away.

Perhaps, but I can't know, and neither can anybody else who lives. Which leaves us a choice between accepting that we cannot know and concentrating on the task at hand or inventing fairy stories that allow us to pretend that we know. I prefer the former.
