Bill,
Here is some more conflicting information-
your report(from telecomtechstocks.com):
Is Chairman Harry Campagna realistic in estimating that InterDigital will sell at least as many 3G chips as its best competitor? YES! Here's why:
1. InterDigital holds the fundamental patents on TDMA and GSM technology, which is essential to WCDMA technology and which distinguishes WCDMA from Qualcomm's version of 3G technology, which Qualcomm calls CDMA2000. WCDMA is specifically designed using TDMA elements to mesh well with existing TDMA-GSM technology, which powers 85% of todays digital cell phones. 2. InterDigital has been working with wideband CDMA technology longer than anyone else in the industry. The Company has produced the only successful wideband system on a chip (its B-CDMA version for wireless local loop). 3. InterDigital representatives have participated in ALL the key ITU 3G standards-setting committees, contributing concepts and methodologies, a significant number of which are now part of the new 3G standards.
This is called having an "inside track." (Qualcomm, by the way, participated only in the standards setting committees dealing with the so-called "Qualcomm standard," CDMA2000. They are in no position to compete effectively with InterDigital when it comes to 3G chip development and sales. Qualcomm, in spite of its genius, simply miscalculated the world's adoption of its competitor's WCDMA standard over CDMA2000. Ericsson and InterDigital's partner, Nokia appear to be the ones who, with IDCC, will be producing the most 3G chips.)
QCOM's Press Release:
"In particular, QUALCOMM has identified to international standards setting organizations more than 100 separate patents and published applications (not counting foreign counterparts) relevant to the W-CDMA standard proposed to those bodies for 3G wireless systems. More than 75 major manufacturers of telecommunications equipment have taken royalty-bearing licenses under QUALCOMM's patent portfolio"
Bill - you look foolish. |
