I don't think that the schools want all the kids on drugs Ish. However, because of the machinations involved in service provision it frequently turns out that medical or professional intervention replaces involvement and participation in the community. A student does not qualify for any kind of special program services unless they can first be diagnosed with a clinical disability. The diagnosis of a disability is for life in most cases. You can claim to have been misdiagnosed but you can never claim to be cured. Once diagnosed the funding kicks in for "accommodations." All of the people who interact with you are now payed to do so. In addition, therapy or treatment has to be something visible to justify the spending. The ticket gets pretty overwhelming sometimes even just for the incidental side effects. For example, it is difficult for people with long term disabilities to develop real friendships when the mainstream doesn't have a valued role for them. It is pretty amazing how much psychological treatment a kid (or adult)with no friends needs. If we taught something as simple as the value of friendship in school we could probably wipe out the counseling profession. Have you ever figured how much of your time with friends is spent in counseling them or listening to some advise from them. If you didn't have buddies you'd be paying for it, trust me.

If we value each individual for what they are "able" to contribute, and then structure society to accommodate each person's particular niche no matter how unique we can do away with lots of social programs that try to normalize everyone to the mold. Come to think of it, I'd probably need some drugs if I had to deal with all the "intervention" they have to put up with day in day out.
