One of the fun things to try with xocharts is to use the Average True Range style. This uses the average true range as the box size. For example, with the Dow Jones Box Index (X.DJB), a 14 day average true range comes up with a box size of 0.11, and came up with a serious buy signal off a triple bottom in early may at 93.70 (now in Os though).

Similarly an average true range over 21 days came up with a box size of 0.08 and the same buy signal at 93.70 (but now in Os).
