Engineers are not your average people. They can think three dimensionally and usually employ much more of their cognitive skills than the so-called "average Joe."

That said, however, many today may be focused and brilliant regarding their engineering skills, but still guess that Connecticut is somewhere in South America.

Since the 1960s the federal government has been a mighty influence (through surrogate organizations like the NEA - a patently socialist group if there ever was one) which continues to exert its statist views within the public education structure.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the textbook approval process (at the level it is now) really gathered steam in the late 80s and into the 90s as the PC syndrome took effect.
