Yes, of course. And they are run by people. And those people fall into one of those two groups. There is a myth, that the people who run mutual funds are better investors, less emotional, "smart money", longer-term thinkers. Not true. Institutional money engages in the same kind of short-term emotional herd behavior that individual investors do.

The advantage that institutional money has is that they usually get crucial info sooner, and can act on it sooner. That's one of the reasons why short-term trading is a losing game for small investors.
