First, the parties are more polarized than ever. The Republican Party is far more conservative than it was even 20 years ago, the Democratic Party more liberal. Second, parties that too far diverge from the electorate end up like the Libertarians, happy to get 5% of the vote. Change is always incremental. Third, people need to be able to count on certain things in making plans. It is preferable for change to be incremental, lest there be too many convulsions in the country. Fourth, this is the first time in since the early 50s that we had the prospect of a Republican Congress and White House, so there will be a better opportunity to press for reform. That is enough for the moment.........
