A couple of thoughts on the DT offer to buy Voicestream:

1. U.S. to E.U., "Okay, we went along with nixing the Sprint/WCOM deal, but now it's time for some quid pro quo. Let one carrier use CDMA in Europe and we'll let DT come here and do GSM. Then let the markets work in both locations."

2. Without this condition, DT would likely try to subsidize their U.S. operations with Euro monopoly money, and neutralize some of the CDMA cost advantages in the U.S. This would not be good.

Can this administration do any horse trading? Are they paying any attention to U.S. competitive position? What gives?
