| The terms are perfectly meaningful, and reflect constellations of values and policy preferences that diverge sharply, if not as much as you would like. On the other hand, conservatives are divergent among themselves, if united for the time being. Broadly, conservatives are those who seek to preserve Western Civilization against nihilistic attack. In domestic political terms, this means holding the line against those who would trash our institutions, and seeking to restore some of what has been lost, for example, by giving more initiative to the states. It is true that some think things sent seriously wrong in the 60s, some in the 30s, and some in the 19th century, but those who recognize that politics is coalition are happy to work with others for common goals.
