Qualcomm CEO Jacobs Sees Market for Company's Chips Increasing

--From AOL.-- Cooters

San Diego, July 11 (Bloomberg) -- Qualcomm Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Irwin Jacobs said the market for the company's semiconductors used in cellular phones will expand as Korea and other countries build more advanced wireless networks.

``We're talking about a rapidly increasing market,'' Jacobs said. ``We expect to be selling a significant part of the CDMA chips.''

The San Diego company developed the code division multiple access, or CDMA, standard for mobile phones. At the end of March, about 57 million people used CDMA phones, according to the CDMA Development Group. That's 11 percent of the 530 million cell-phone users worldwide, according to Strategis Group Inc.

Qualcomm shares rocketed 27-fold last year, making the company the best performer on the Standard & Poor's 500 Index. They've fallen 70 percent this year as South Korea, the company's biggest market, and China have made moves away from using the technology Qualcomm favors.

Jacobs said Qualcomm's chip sales will increase because demand will rise, even though its market share may shrink because of competition. He declined to give specific figures.

Qualcomm shares fell 1 7/8 to 53.
