Ben, Overpopulation is the cause of many of our ills. The bad good news is that it always cures itself. <g>

I think being in a group and being well armed are two of the best ways to ward off attacks by bears or anything else. I don't hunt, but I do hike in the wilderness every once in a while. I am always armed with a 10 mm automatic handgun(I often wear it legally concealed in Houston, too, though, for weight considerations and comfort, I often go with a much less assuring .380 Walther in an ankle holster). Some folks consider that paranoid, but I've never been attacked by an animal or a criminal. I believe that predators, human and animal, can smell someone who can do them harm and avoid that person. Then again, maybe its just my smell that keeps them away. <g>
