Parents are always selfish. We are selfish to have children- we have selfish (imo) genes. We wish to propagate. I accept selfishness. But there are laws, imposed on us, via our contract with society. In most societies one parent is NOT allowed to run off with a kid that is jointly "owned". Because let's face it- we own our children. We can move them about. We can choose what to feed them, what churches they will attend, what books they will have available, what news sources they will be able to access in their home, we control EVERYTHING for a young child. We selfishly control everything because we think we know best.

So although I don't have a problem with selfishness per se- I DO have a problem with child endangerment (which this was) and with rule breakers.
