"Colleges usually allow the teachers to choose their texts, so its based on the
usual process of bribery and kickbacks that has long characterized the industry. Not
everybody plays."

The "write you own textbook play" is not the only textbook racket. One of the best is the advance from the publisher of a few grand for a new book. Until you finish the book, you use one of the publishers existing texts. There are actually professors I have known (at UIUC, for instance), who write textbooks and contribute the royalties from sales at UI to the student welfare fund. Textbook companies used to bribe textbook committees to adopt their texts. I know companies that pay professors a few hundred dollars to "review" a new textbook. One is expected to produce fulsome praise to be quoted and to adopt the book.
I haven't used a textbook in several years. Much better stuff on the www. Far more up to date.
