Partner Starts Commercial Installation of Israeli eXalink's WAP Router
By Efi Landau
globes.co.il

Cellular telephony company Partner has commenced the commercial installation of the WAP router manufactured by eXalink of Israel, which is to be sold to Comverse in a $550 million share swap deal. In recent months, Partner has been testing the eXalink router, along with that of the competing company Phon.com. Company sources told "Globes" that the eXalink product's performances were much better than those of Phone.com.

Partner has not yet commenced commercial Internet access service through WAP protocol, one reason being that there are not enough telephone instruments supporting WAP that have undergone full Hebrew-language conversion. The instruments now being tested by Partner are Motorola's Thri-Band, Motorola's StarTAC, Ericsson's R-320.

eXalink has developed a unique WAP router, enabling Internet-based services to be provided to all types of cellular instruments. WAP is a protocol enabling Internet content to be received by cellular telephone instruments and suitable portable computers, and through it, highly advanced value added services can be supplied to cellular telephone users.

It is reported that, in addition to the commercial installation in Partner, eXalink is about to announce this week commercial installation in a South American company. It is also reported that eXalink is currently commencing commercial operation in two cellular companies in Europe.

Last month, eXalink announced that it had signed a commercial distribution agreement with CGTEL, of the Coasin telecommunications group, which operates in most South American countries, enabling cellular operators in Latin America to provide their subscribers with cellular Internet services.

At the end of May, eXalink signed a strategic co-operation agreement with Teleholding, which controls over 30% of the data transmission market in Ecuador in Latin America, according to which it will supply it with cellular Internet technology.
