To minimize ESD damage, I tend to work in the kitchen with the stuff on the burners so everything is grounded and no ESD. On carpet area, I would attach power cord so I can discharge myself often by touching the computer case. But of course that is pretty dangerous if one is not careful, can get fried that way if you touch the wrong place.

Got to really watch for the ESD damage when you are doing this.
