acyberguy,

well, not being in any way, shape or form a pc gamer... i'm really not too well versed on the power requirements. from reading your posts, i'm finding it real easy to say that you do not have enough computing power to put you in the kind of place you want to be in. yet, your laptop is so much better by comparison....

so if both machines have similar cpu's and identical ram, the differences come down to operating systems and graphics cards. i'd say you probably have a vid card in that 3 year old gateway with 2mb of ram on it. that's what i have in a 3 year old dell. as you probably know, today it is not uncommon to find 16mb and 32mb graphics cards in desktops.

the laptop must have a better card, just like you said earlier. if i were you, i'd check in with gateway (dell offers lifetime tech support, gateway probably does too) and give 'em your specs and ask 'em what they think. they'll also be able to competently advise you as to what you might be able to do to bump your performance.

i wish i could be of more help. when you find out, i'd love to hear about it.

good luck

:)
