Although it wouldn't have surprised me, I haven't seen any evidence of Intel retalitation against companies that announced AMD base products. One of these companies was Hewlett-Packard, Intel's partner in the Merced development. Another was Compaq [oops, guess that was Cyrix, but same difference], yet I am quite certain that Intel did not retaliate agains them. So your position, while entirely plausible, is not supported by actual facts that I am aware of.
