The most effective method of dealing with black bears I have ever seen, happened in 1969 when I took my first job. After high school I worked on the diamond drills north of Geralton Ontario. We set up camp on the shore of lake Nipigon and after about a week one night we heard a commotion in the cook tent. A black bear had ripped open the side of the tent and proceeded to destroy and eat everything in it's path. After it finished it ripped open the other side of the tent and took off. I was 19 years old and on my first job so you can imagine "you couldn't have driven a pin up my behind". The old foreman on the job who had worked around the world including the jungles of South America had the solution to the bear problem.The next day he rigged up a large pail of treats and placed it in a clearing about a 1/4 mile from the camp.Under this pail of treats he placed a stick of dynamite along with a blasting cap and a few hundred feet of "b" line. Guess whose job it was to sit there for the day waiting for the bear? About 3 in the afternoon out comes the bear and sticks his head in the pail of goodies. It seemed like an an eternity as I fumbled to ignite the "b" line. .....but I must say after I did , WE HAD NO MORE PROBLEMS WITH BEARS! e
